The many faces of Marie

Opening Elisa Miller's new series "The Other", "The many faces of Marie" poses questions of identity and invites us to consider the limited possibilities of expressing one's true self.

Taking inspiration from the famous quote of French author Jean-Paul Sartre "Hell is other people", Elisa explores the inner turmoil these women are going through and attempting to hide from the world. But what if hell isn't actually other people - but the things we do to ourselves?

In this series of staged images, she offers a powerful lens through which the viewer contemplates these women in vulnerability and introspective moments. She uses richly saturated colours in a way that feels like an invitation to dream bigger than our own preconceived notions of what it means to fit in, to look beyond the boundaries we've set for ourselves and to become our true selves.

Miller invites us to imagine what it might feel like if we were able to express ourselves without fear of judgment or condemnation.
